SISTA Project – Since 2003 - outreach and recruitment component is designed to educate African American women about HIV/AIDS/STD and Hepatitis C and to provide factual and statistical information about the diseases, correct misconceptions about HIV/AIDS, and discuss the importance of protecting oneself. All individuals encountered during outreach and recruitment activities receive culturally sensitive brochures and literature, HIV testing referrals, and are encouraged to test for HIV at local testing sites so they may know their status.
The SISTA Project – support group component – is a gender relevant and culturally sensitive social skills training intervention for African American women. The program is curriculum guided and contains five core elements that emphasize ethnic and gender pride, HIV risk reduction, sexual negotiation skills, proper condom use, and the development of partner norms supportive of consistent condom use. Issues such as dating, relationships, healthy sexual practices, and improving a woman’s ability to effectively communicate safer sexual practices with their partners are discussed. Referrals for medical, social services and HIV testing are offered to participants enrolled in all support groups.
